Mentor Program
The READ Association of Saginaw County began in 1966 when over 300 volunteers came together to become reading mentors for students struggling with literacy.
That initial grassroots effort has grown into what we know today as READ's Mentor Program, which operates throughout the school year in around 2-dozen schools & libraries throughout the county.
We asked Mentors "What is Your Why?"
& they answered:
“I love making a difference, not just in reading but hopefully their lives by taking that one-on-one time and letting them know how important they are.”
"I volunteer because I enjoy the children's smiles when they 'get it,' the way they look at you when they figure out you're trying to help them and that you care!"
"I do READ because I believe literacy leads to success, & I want our kids to SUCCEED!"
Summer Mentor Program
This 7-week version of our school-based Mentor Program began in 2025 and has engaged with dozens of families and volunteers and impacted literacy by helping to limit and avoid the dreaded Summer Slide.
READ's Summer Mentor Program will kick off again in Summer 2027, and whether you want to sign our kids up or volunteer to be a mentor, connect with us to get added to the list!
